Questions people ask
How do I choose a CPA in Colorado?
Look for an active Colorado CPA license, experience with situations like yours (business, rental, IRS issues), clear pricing and fast communication. You can verify a license through the Colorado Division of Professions and Occupations.
What's the difference between a CPA, an EA and a tax preparer?
CPAs are state-licensed accountants. Enrolled agents (EAs) are federally licensed tax specialists. Both can represent you before the IRS. Other preparers can prepare returns but have more limited representation rights.
When is the Colorado tax deadline?
Individual returns follow the federal deadline, usually April 15, with an automatic six-month extension to file (not to pay).
I can't pay my tax bill. What should I do?
File on time anyway, pay what you can, and set up a payment plan with the IRS and, if needed, the Colorado Department of Revenue.
How long should I keep tax records?
Generally at least three years after filing, and longer for property records and some situations. Many CPAs recommend seven years for business records.
Do I need to file a Colorado return if I live elsewhere?
If you earned Colorado-source income above the filing threshold, you may need a nonresident Colorado return.
What does it cost to catch up on bookkeeping?
It depends on how many accounts and months are involved. A quick call to review your situation gets you a real estimate.
Can I deduct my home office?
If you're self-employed and use part of your home regularly and exclusively for business, often yes. Employees generally can't under current federal rules.
What is a TABOR refund?
A refund of state revenue collected above Colorado's constitutional limit, usually delivered through your Colorado income tax return.
Is my information safe if I work with a CPA online?
Reputable firms use encrypted client portals rather than email attachments for sensitive documents. Ask which portal a firm uses before sending anything.
